Math Vocabulary

Data Analysis

line plot: A number line with marks or dots that show frequency.

scatter plot: A graph with points plotted to show a possible relationship between two sets of data.

stem-and-leaf plot: A graph used to organize and display data so that the frequencies can be.

circle graph: A graph that uses sectors of a circle to compare parts to the whole and parts to other parts.

frequency table: A table that lists items together according to the number of times, or frequency, that the items occur.

line graph: A graph that uses line segments to show how data changes.

Probability

combination: An arrangement of items or events in which order does not matter.

dependent events: Events for which the outcome of one event affects the probability of the second event.

experimental probability: The ratio of the number of times an event occurs to the total number of trials, or times that the activity is performed.

independent events: Events for which the outcome of one event does not affect the probability of the other.

Algebra-Solving Linear Equations & Inequalities

equivalent expression: Equivalent expressions have the same value for all values of the variables. 4x 5x and 9x are equivalent expressions.

like terms: Two or more terms that have the same variable raised to the same power. In the expression 3a 5b 12a, 3a and 12a are like terms.

simplify: To write a fraction or expression in simplest form. 6/8 = 3/4

solution of a system of equations: A set of values that make all equations in a system true.

permutation: An arrangement of items or events in which order is important. ABC, ACB, BAC, BCA, CAB, CBA.

probability: A number from 0 to 1 (or 0% to 100%) that describes how likely an event is to occur.

simulation: A model of an experiment, often one that would be too difficult or too time consuming to actually perform.

theoretical probability: The ratio of the number of equally likely outcomes in an event to the total number of possible outcomes. A bag contains 3 red marbles and 4 blue marbles. The probability of randomly choosing a red marble is 3/7. When rolling a number cube, the theoretical probability of rolling a 4 is 1/6.

binomial: A polynomial with two terms.

degree of a polynomial: The highest power of the variable in a polynomial.

monomial: A number or a product of numbers and variables with exponents that are whole numbers.

polynomial: One monomial or the sum or difference of monomials.

trinomial: A polynomial with three terms.

origin:  coordinate point (0,0).  Where you begin on the coordinate plane to graph coordinate points.

slope:  the steepness of a line (rise)

                                                                        run

y intercept:  where the line crosses on the y axis

y=mx + b   :  slope intercept formula for a line

domain:  the input, x

range:  the output, y

coordinate point:  odered pairs or the x and y coordinates on a coordinate plane
